As we plunge into the new year, we inevitably set new resolutions that feed our serotonin levels; we bet on activities that invite adventure and connect us with the world around us. The Algarve hides the most picturesque natural places that should be a must-see for anyone exploring the region - why not do some outdoor activity while witnessing the beauty of nature?
Pack your rucksack, put on your hiking trainers and set off along the nature trails that the Algarve has to offer:
1. Ria Formosa Natural Park
Stretching along 60 kilometres of coastline from Praia do Garrão to Praia da Manta Rota, the Ria Formosa Natural Park has a network of trails, including the São Lourenço Trails, the Loulé Litoral Walkways and the Marim Walking Route, which wind through different ecosystems, from salt pans to lagoons. Here, you'll come into contact with an abundance of unique birds and flora, while enjoying panoramic views over the stunning coastline.
2. Seven Hanging Valleys Trail
The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, in the municipality of Lagoa, offers a thrilling journey along the rugged cliffs of the Algarve coast. The approximately 6 km (12 km round trip) trail runs along the coastal cliff between Praia da Marinha and Praia Vale de Centeanes and along the way we literally cross seven hanging valleys, which were once associated with the mouth of a water line that plunged directly into the sea. Marvel at the landscapes next to the beaches carved out of the rocks, the hidden caves and the sparkling turquoise water as you walk along this scenic trail.
3. Fonte Benémola Trail
Located in the municipality of Loulé between Querença, Tôr and Benafim, the Benémola Fountain Trail is a 4.5 kilometre circular footpath in the heart of the Algarve's barrocal region, with an easy level of difficulty. This trail invites nature lovers to explore the wooded landscapes and crystal-clear streams that serve as a backdrop for the local ecosystem made up of terrapins, nightingales, greenfinches, mouse bats, jays and many others. This is an ideal activity for families or groups of friends.
4. Barranco do Demo Walkway
Venture into the Serra de Monchique and discover a paradise for mountain lovers: the Barranco do Demo Walkway. This walkway is located in the village of Alferce, near Monchique, and crosses a rocky gorge known as the Barranco do Demo (which eventually gave the walkway its name). It's only 1km long and consists of climbs, descents, a few steps and a suspension bridge built 20 metres above the ground. It can be accessed from the north or south side and on both sides you can find rest areas with tables and benches that provide moments of contemplation. If you like panoramic views, this is an experience not to be missed in the Algarve mountains.
5. Via Algarviana
The GR13 - Via Algarviana is a set of trails divided into 14 sectors and spread across the Algarve region. From Alcoutim, on the banks of the River Guadiana, to Cape St Vincent overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, these trails cross three Algarve mountain ranges (Caldeirão, Monchique and Espinhaço de Cão), the barrocal, the beira-serra and part of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park over 300km. The Via Algarviana offers options for all types of walkers, from the more difficult 30km trails to the easier 'Pequenas Rotas', which can be done in one day. This is a project for lovers of nature and outdoor sports that allows you to explore the Algarve differently.
